Chilifresh book reviews

Our library subscribes to Chilifresh which enables our users to contribute their own book reviews online for items in our catalogue. Book reviews from other Chilifresh libraries around the world can also be seen from the catalogue. Chilifresh has recently provided libraries with a widget to put on their web pages displaying latest reviews etc. Testing this widget for our book reviews

Delicious

I have created a Delicious account and imported bookmarks from my laptop at home. It is a much easier way of keeping track of all your bookmarks - mine are normally across my safari toolbar, but are not in any order and you have to expand it to see everything.
Huge potential for reference staff - a nice little job for someone to start off then others can add, beats emailing staff about a new website that may be useful. I've recently been looking at to go for our summer holiday, so have added bookmarks for all potential accommodation I've found - makes it easier to then go & compare them all & show the rest of the family. Easy to get rid of them all too once we have finalized our holiday.

Here is a tag cloud from my Delicious:

Library Thing

I've just put 5 books on my new Library thing site. It was interesting seeing who else owned the same titles, especially the nonfiction title. I have been wanting to add library thing to our catalogue for a while now, will need to budget for it - just one more thing on my "To do list"

RSS Feeds

Viewing blog updates or rss feeds on an aggregator makes it much easier to keep up. All the blogs I'm following automatically went into google reader, & I've added a few more. I set up a bloglines account and so far have added OPAL Training ; Courier mail making money ; ABC Breaking news ; Apple. Looking forward to when we can offer RSS feeds of website and catalogue updates to our clients. Between the 2 I like google reader, seems easier to use - a bit more intuitive, but maybe I need to spend a bit more time with bloglines before I decide which one I will stick with.

Social networking

I have been using Facebook for a while now, & after going to an interstate school reunion last year, it was great to be able to add many old school mates as Friends so we can keep in touch. It's such an easy way to stay in contact with people who you would normally only hear from once a year via a 1 line Xmas card! I keep photos on Facebook too. I've just joined the IFLA 2010 Brisbane conference facebook group - very excited about the conference.
I've been hearing a lot about Twitter lately, so have just joined & added a Twitter widget to my blog. Will have to investigate it further, I've heard its useful for conferences.
I used Ning in the leadup to SLQ's web 2 Unconferences - useful as preparation.

Wikis

Wikis are a great way to collect information together. I have been wanting to create a wiki for cataloguing staff for a few years now, & it looks like at last, with a new intranet coming soon I just may be ale to create one. It will enable me to organize & link & bring together all the resources needed for cataloguing staff such as in-house work notes & procedures, online tools such as Webdewey, LCSH, Libraries Australia, World cat etc ; websites such as fantastic fiction etc.
Staff could also put up examples of particular catalogued items to assist with consistency and efficiency.
I have just added a thread (under the name penh) to the slq's wetpaint Library 2.0 wiki.

Flickr

It was useful reading about Commons & Creative commons - It makes what I can & can't do with images I find on the web a lot clearer.
Here is a photo from my flickr site taken on a holiday at Sunshine Beach. My flickr site is just shared with family friends & its where I put a selection of our family photos.

Playing with colours

Maybe there is a reason I'm not an interior decorator!! I may have to change it all back, I think this background looks a bit soupy.

My first post

When setting up this new blog using my google login, I remembered I already set up a private blog in Blogger in 2007. In my initial enthusiasm back then, I had a flurry of activity on it, shared it with friends and relatives, then let it lapse as life suddenly got too busy. My flickr site, also set up at around the same time, has had no photos added since 2007. The only social networking I keep up with is Facebook with my friends list gradually growing. Maybe when I retire ...
From a professional perspective, it would be great to replace the Library e-newsletter that I currently produce every month with a blog. A lot of the information I put in there is worth archiving & would then be retrievable with tags. It would also be great to have feedback in the form of comments from our clients. So a big push needed to get it off the ground.
